HI Gordon, I have one or rather a few here for your review as I am curious on your response as it is applicable to several scenarios.
I won a protest in a race in Valenciennes for a regular port/starboard rule infraction. But the judges told me that i had broken rule (I can't remember) for having touching the other boat but since there was no damages as confirmed in one of the question from the other skipper I was exonerated from penalty.
Now, while I fully understand and support this is full size boats, in RC sailing it is not always that easy to avoid boats, depending where you stand, your vision, angle of sight, sun etc... and inevitably more contacts can be seen and frequent on most races, but yet to see actual damage done to the other boat.
What should I do next time? avoid contact by crash tacking? or sheeting off while trying to avoid the other boat? my point is this contact happened but was not intentional. I actually just clipped him as he crossed in front of me - I knew it was going to be close but wasn't sure and I'd say the other skipper was of the same view but we stay on my course and made contact I protested and won my protest but if I had actually bore away to avoid contact and protested how could I prove there would have been contact if i had not changed my course, he would have been unlikely to accept my protest and do his turn.
So my question is how in RC sailing you try to avoid contact but still have a strong case in your protest in front of the other skipper who can easily say no we were not going to touch, adding he changed his course thinking there would be contact but there wouldn't have been if he had stayed on his course... he just change course to justify his protest?
